Hi Srivatsan, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. Please tell us a few lines about yourself.
I’m Srivatsan Sankaran hailing from Chennai, India. I am an engineer by education but an ardent travel photo blogger by passion. I have been pursuing my passion for the past 8 years. It began with Sony DSC-S600 and I learned a lot through a dedicated lifestyle for understanding the very nuances of travel photography and blogging. My primary objective of travel photo blogging is to bring out a sense of union with Mother Nature, and a sense of singularity with people. Exploring and experiencing the new places and to capture people’s life style, culture and tradition in a sincere way bring immense happiness to me.
What inspired you to start a travel blog? Are you presently doing this full time?
Photography used to be an area of significant interest for me till 12th standard. In the two years, I developed a keen fascination for photography. It resurfaced on a trip to Munnar where I had my first experience using a small point and shoot camera with which I took pictures of sunrise with a heavy fog. I put up the photographs on Flickr and received comments by foreigners appreciating me.
In order to gain more knowledge, I decided to start a travel blog to showcase my work efficiently. Sharing my experience through words and pictures in blog added another feather and I believe constant learning is the key to get inspired.
Yes, I am doing this full time since I am passionate about it.
Please tell us about your travel blog Travel Tales by Srivatsan.
Travel Tales by Srivatsan – It depicts the real life story of a home bound traveller.
How do you fund your travels?
I’m associated with various brands like Manfrotto, Tamron and Zeiss since I use them for photography during travel. Sometimes, I do associate with travel magazines but it’s very challenging. Creativity is the only way to distinguish yourself from others to get fund otherwise I use my own money to explore places.
How do you prepare before going for a trip?
I always prepare well before exploring the places. I jot down all the places in an excel sheet and it’s important. Travel blogging requires proper planning and goals despite ground works to reach goals.
What is the secret of writing an outstanding travel blog post?
There is no secret but hard work does!
What measures do you usually follow before starting a travel blog post?
Before starting a travel blog post, I always write down the keys in notepad while traveling. It plays a major role in developing the content. Sometimes, voice note may help to express the experience. And the most important one is choosing the right set of images for the blog post.
Where did you go during your last travel tour?
I visited Spiti Valley, also known as the Middle Land, which denotes its position right between Tibet and India and considered as one of the most remote regions of India. Cradled by the mighty Himalayas, Spiti is a desert mountain valley, tucked away far from the prying eyes of civilization. Spiti is considered to be a place solely reserved only for the undaunted adventurous spirits.
Where are you planning to go next?
I have a huge list to be explored and will be planning to explore trans Himalayas during the winter expedition.
As a traveller, you must have come across many memorable events. Could you share a few of them with our readers?
Wahlyngkhat is a beautiful place in the East Khasi Hills district, nestled to the Sohra mountains, Meghalaya. After a long drive to Dawki, our driver halted at this beautiful place and asked if we were interested in fresh seafood since the village’s fish market is quite popular and people from Bangladesh throng the village for selling them. I decided to walk down along with him even though I could not keep up with his pace due to a muscle cramp. The path to the village is a cemented staircase in the middle of a shallow jungle. The view from the bridge was quite mesmerizing and enthralling. I was stunned to see the villagers speak very good English and later came to know that the native language of this village is English. Their routine is not at all easy and their life in this place is very hard. But I will always remember the warm smiles, simplicity and the enthusiasm of the people. I believe Wahlyngkhat will emerge as the cleanest village in short distant future.
Which is your dream travel destination?
My dream destination is Iceland. It’s challenging. I hope that I would visit there once in my life.
