Today, in this interview session with conflatingVisions, Dimpy Gogoi joins us to share her inspiring story!
Hi Dimpy, glad to have you with us today. To start with, we would request you to say a few lines about yourself.
Hi! I am Dimpy Gogoi, a 25-year-old young girl from Nazira, Assam. By profession, I am a dentist and by passion a photographer.
Since you are a practising dentist, managing time for photography seems to be quite a challenge for you!
Yes, I am a full-time dentist and as you know, there could never be an off-time for doctors. Still, I manage time. And, I have to! Just that there’s no rest on weekends but now that’s okay. Earlier I used to go to different places on weekends for photography. Also, I used to explore different places during a vacation.
Now my smartphone helps me lot in doing street or nature photography because it is not possible every time to carry my DSLR along with me. So, whenever I find something interesting, I get the same framed!
When did you discover your love for photography?
Well, I discovered my love for photography because of my father. He loves to travel a lot and we used to accompany him. He used to take us to different places in India and we would just surrender ourselves to the serenity of nature. The whole experience used to move me and I started feeling an urge to go through those memories again and again.
I started doing photography 6-7 years back. Earlier I had a digital camera. In 2015, I got my first DSLR. Since then, photography became a serious affair for me and I also started pursuing it professionally.
Which genres of photography are your favourite?
My favourite genres of photography are Travel, Landscape and Street. Mostly, I do travel and landscape photography.
What do you enjoy the most about your favourite photography genre?
I love doing travel and nature photography because they give me the best feeling while capturing those moments. I love to preserve all the experiences that I had in all those places in the form of memories. And also I love to show to the people that how beautiful our world is!
Who are your inspirations in the field of photography?
There are many photographers who inspire me. But the photography works of travel photographer Auditya Venkatesh and landscape master Debraj Chakraborty are my major motivations!
As a photographer, you have travelled many places, met many people on your journeys. You must have had many eventful experiences. Please share a few of them with our readers.
Yes, I have so many memories and beautiful moments during my travels with my friends or family.
Recently, I went to Dzukou Valley for trekking and that is my best trip till date. I am saying this because we started our trek during the evening time and it was raining. It was like a do or die situation for all of us. When we reached our destination, it was almost 10:30 PM. During this Dzoukou Valley trek trip, we were 10 unknown souls. However, we helped each other during our trekking and later on became a family. These are some of the experiences that motivate me to travel a lot!
What do you think creates a good travel photograph?
A photograph becomes a good travel photograph when it can express the feeling of time and place, portrays a land, its people, or a culture in its natural state.
Dimpy, what are your views on post processing of photographs?
For post processing of photographs, I use Adobe Lightroom because it gives the best outcome that u want in a natural way.
According to me, a photograph should not be manipulated to the extent that changes the environment and also the scenario of a particular place.
What are the photography equipments that you presently use?
Earlier, I was using a basic Canon DSLR 1200D with dual kit lens i.e., 18-55mm and 55-250mm. Recently, I bought a Canon 6D with 24-105 USM lens and a Canon 50mm prime lens. I also have a tripod and an external flash.
A dream destination where you want to go…
There are so many places in India that I am yet to explore! However, if you ask me about one dream destination then it has to be Rann of Kutch. I want to see that white desert on a full moon night!
Any upcoming travel plans?
I have some upcoming travel plans with my friends and family. But for now, I am planning to visit Majuli located in Assam. It is also world’s largest river island!
Dimpy, anything else you want to share.
All I want to say is keep travelling and make memories. Travelling is the only thing that gives you time for yourself, for your family and friends and you will learn more about yourself. And, if you are an upcoming photographer, then never stop taking photos and take as many as you can!
