Cakeazzle, the home based baking venture based in Bangalore started operations in 2016. This is the place where cake artist Tejal Doshi Lakkar brings her creative imaginations to life. And, the end products are beautiful handmade customized cakes! Tejal is a self-taught baker. She, however, attended a few cake decorating classes from the famous home bakers in India to enhance her skills of baking cakes. A hobby baker turning into a professional cake artist is definitely praiseworthy!
Today Tejal Doshi Lakkar, the founder of Cakeazzle, joins us in this interview session with conflatingVisions. The talented home baker from Bangalore tells us about herself, her aspirations and about her future plans for her home baking business Cakeazzle!
Hi Tejal, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. Please tell us a few lines about yourself.
I’m a simple girl next door, born and brought up at Kolkata in a family where education was always of prime importance. I am a CA Intermediate qualified and B.Com (Hons.) graduate. I married my long time best friend, Saurav, in November 2014. He, along with my elder sister, Hetal, are my best critic!
What invoked your interest in baking?
My undying love for cakes and chocolates made me a self-taught home baker.
When did you bake for the first time? How was the outcome?
My grandmother loved cakes but she would eat only home made ones. Back then, in years 1998-2000, I used to assist my elder sister in baking simple sponge cakes. In time, I learned to do it all by myself with small changes here and there. The outcome was a simple request by friends and family to take up baking professionally!
Tejal, did you ever attended any cake decorating classes to learn baking?
I’m a self-taught baker. However, I have taken a couple of cake decorating classes from famous home bakers like Poonam Maaria Prem and Maaria Kulsum Tanveer.
Tell us about Cakeazzle.
A hobby baker turned professional, I’m someone who believes in “Life is short, eat dessert first!” I baked for friends and family. I baked on mood swings too, as a stress buster! Such was my passion for cakes that they became my soft cosy getaway from everything else! Yet, I always looked at my baking venture as a retirement gift to myself!
On a turning point in life, I asked myself, why then, do it now! With absolute and unconditional support from my husband and the entire family, Cakeazzle came into existence.
Much as the name suggests, it’s my little cake castle that aims to bedazzle every single customer by amplifying their happiness with our heartfelt bakes!
What are some of the signature items of Cakeazzle?
We take orders for eggless customized cakes, structured cakes and customized cupcakes along with brookies and cookies.
Which one is your most challenging baking assignment so far?
The most challenging cake so far was the 3D aeroplane cake with checkerboard cake underneath it. It was my first attempt at structured cakes. My husband’s inexplicably strong belief in my abilities was the only reason I could actually do it! I enjoyed carving that cake the most too.
Tejal, please narrate some of your success stories.
My first dessert table order was for a little baby’s baptism ceremony. The response received from the mother was amazingly heartwarming. It only reaffirmed my belief in happiness spread by cakes!
As a professional baker, what are the challenges in life?
Work life balance is tough as most celebrations are on weekends and that makes weekends working days for us bakers. But with the support of the spouse and family members, it’s a doable challenge.
What are your plans to scale up the growth of Cakeazzle?
Looking forward to a future where Cakeazzle would grow into a high-end Cake Studio specializing in structured cakes.
Anything else you want to share.
I’d like to thank team conflatingVisions for considering my work and this interview as well.
And one last question of this interview session Tejal, if you have had one wish…
I hope and wish my son, Krishnav (4 months old now), loves and enjoys cake as much as I do, if not more!
