Blissful Bites, a home bakery in Hyderabad was started in 2016. The founder, G. Silviya Jaya Kamala, is an inspiration for all those people who are looking to build a career out of their passion. A Post Graduate in Embedded Systems, Silviya decided to take the path less travelled and turned her love for baking into a successful profession. And, this is exactly what happens if you work hard to pursue your passion!
Today, Silviya, the talented young home baker from Hyderabad joins us in this interview session with conflatingVisions. In this conversation, she tells us about her inspiring journey as a home baker!
Hi Silviya, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. To start with, we would like to know a few lines about yourself.
Well, as you know I am Silviya. I am the founder of Blissful Bites. Baking is my passion. Although I have completed my Post Graduation in Embedded Systems, my passion for baking drove me towards it. Quite often I got appreciations from my family and friends for my work which gave me the confidence to take it up full time.
Did you ever attend any cake baking or cake decorating class to learn baking?
As far as I remember, baking is a childhood affair for me! My mom (Sowmithri) used to bake cakes for every Christmas. I along with my sister (Sally) used to help her. When I grew up, I started baking cakes myself. My friends started asking me to bake cakes for various occasions in their lives. In fact, everyone loved my cakes!
Once I decided to venture into the baking business, I attended a cake decorating class where I had learnt a lot of cake decorating techniques in a professional way.
Silviya, how memorable is your first baking experience?
I was 15 when I baked my first cake. My dad (G. Jaya Chandra Babu) loved sponge cake so I made a sponge cake. It turned out to be really nice. I and my sister used to bake cakes. While my sister strictly followed mom’s recipe, I would make some changes to it. Ultimately my cake would taste better!
When did you decide to become a professional baker and start Blissful Bites? What acted as your inspiration?
It started as a hobby. I gradually started developing interest towards the 3D cakes to make it close to reality. I once happened to watch Sugar Stars show on Fox Traveller and I saw that they made cakes that were as close to reality. Sometimes it was difficult to differentiate between the cake and the object. I was really surprised and awestruck! That show was my inspiration to become a professional baker. All my friends, family and my mentor encouraged me to start my venture.
Please tell us about your home baking venture Blissful Bites.
As I told you, I am a Post Graduate and naturally business was not in my mind. Although it started as a hobby, I could visualize myself as achieving something great in this field. So, my passion pushed me towards this.
I started Blissful Bites on June 5th, 2016. I started buying equipment as needed. The more I got into it, I started realizing the depth of the tasks. Initially, I was in Kurnool, now that I moved to Hyderabad, my venture is here with me. I had put in a lot of hard work to nurture Blissful Bites and bring it to where it is today! Each step in this journey is a memorable experience and I feel blessed to be able to do this.
How do you go about innovating on the cake baking recipes?
I follow a lot of online baking classes to improve the quality of my work and meet the requirements of my clients. My clients also play a huge role in helping me create new recipes. My brother, Vijay, is my honest critic. I go by his judgement most of the times.
What are some of the signature products of Blissful Bites? Which one is your personal favourite?
Double Chocolate Cake is the signature product according to me and it is my personal favourite too.
What are some of the challenging cake designs that you have done so far?
Adidas Superstar Shoe Cake, Dates Cake, Royal Enfield Bike Cake, People Modelling Cake.
Tell us some of your success stories that have influenced you to bake better.
I made a Saree and Jewellery Cake that was just so real. Everyone who saw the cake was in a state of awe. It took them a minute to realise that it’s a cake. And incidentally, this was the first cake after Blissful Bites was started.
When I made the Shoe Cake, the client was really happy and she has given me an amazing feedback. I literally forgot all the hard work that was put in by listening to her words and seeing her so happy! All said and done client’s happiness is my happiness.
The Gym Theme Cake that I had made was as real as it could get. My brother was carrying to the client and a guy in the gym came to help him thinking the kettle bell was real. This was an amazing experience as I could see that people were not able to differentiate between the cake and the real object.
The flowers that I made as part of decoration were considered to be real by most of the people who saw them. Each time somebody thinks that my creation is real, I get inspired to do more and more of that sort and surprise people. Each cake is a challenge and I try very hard to reach the expectation of my clients.
What are some of the challenges that a baker often has to face? How do you deal with them?
1. Reaching the expectations of the clients by getting into their minds to understand what they are visualizing.
2. Last minute orders.
3. Handling the cake carefully while delivering it.
Every baker needs a lot of patience!
What are your future plans for Blissful Bites?
I am working towards expanding Blissful Bites. I want to bake everything that I see.
Anything else you want to share…
I would like to encourage everyone to follow their passion although it might not be the same as the crowd. I myself have taken the road less travelled. While all my friends have taken up jobs in their respective technical fields, I chose to start baking as my career. Although I was uncertain at that time, now when I look back I feel that was the best thing to do. So, in my opinion, everybody should believe in hard work and follow their passion.
I am lucky to have a sister (Sally) who encouraged me to start my venture and my brother-in-law (M. Prasanth) who gave me a lot of suggestions in developing blissful Bites and a supporting brother (Vijay) who was always there with me in good times and hard times. Blissful Bites is not about one person, it’s a team work which made it successful.
And one last question of this session Silviya, if you have had one wish…
I wish my dad was here to see my success.
