Mayura Walvekar started her professional career as an interior designer. She worked as an Architectural Technologist in the UK. It was Mayura’s love for arts, colours and designs that motivated her to pursue interior designing. Although she had interests in baking since childhood, becoming a professional baker was however never in her plans. During her daughter’s second birthday, she made a 2-tier chocolate cake and it turned out to be a really good one. The event instilled a huge confidence within her after which she decided to start her own baking business. In 2012, The Scrumptious Cakes was born.
Mayura Walvekar is presently based in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. Today, she joins us in this interview session to tell our readers her inspiring story as an entrepreneur cum professional baker.
Hi Mayura, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. To begin with, we would request you to tell us a few lines about yourself.
I started my career as an Interior Designer qualified from Marathwada Mitra Mandal School of Interior Design, Pune. As a child, I always had a flair for arts, colours and designs. I have inherited the love for cake baking and cake decorating from my Mother. I have lived my childhood in a joint family, and my Mother baked cakes for all the children in the family for birthdays. As I grew up, I made cakes from cake mixes but never baked my own cakes.
I worked as an Architectural Technologist in the UK and got married in the year 2004. After my daughter had turned 1.5 years, my Mother died of cancer. It was my daughter’s 2nd birthday, and we decided to have a few of her friends to make her feel special. I baked and decorated a 2 tier chocolate cake. Making that cake gave me a great feeling, after which I decided to start my own business of cakes and wedding cakes.
How did you learn baking? And, when did you decide to enter into the world of professional baking?
I did not do baking from scratch for my 1st three orders then decided to go for a baking class. I did a business cupcake class where we learnt the ways to run a business. We also learnt how to make cupcakes, cake decorating techniques and many more things related to baking. YouTube videos also helped me learn a lot on the cake decorating styles.
Mayura, we all are now part of a digital world and everyone of us can learn almost anything staying in our homes. What are your views on the online baking classes?
Online baking classes is a wonderful way of spreading your baking techniques and style of cake decorating to thousands of people who find you online and you don’t have to leave your home to learn cake decorating.
Please tell us about your baking business The Scrumptious Cakes.
As I mentioned above how The Scrumptious Cakes started, we have gone through a lot of milestones and still many more years to go. The Scrumptious Cakes specializes in white chocolate ganache for covering our cakes. We started from word of mouth and later got a Facebook Page. We gathered a lot of recognition through friends and family around in Milton Keynes because of white chocolate ganache. It was something that was not found in Milton Keynes. Most cake decorators here use fondant, buttercream and fresh cream.
The Scrumptious Cakes is a certified Cake Decorating Master Class from PME Arts. We started from birthday cakes, cupcakes and other special occasion cakes. Since the last 3 years, we are also doing wedding cakes. We have a lot of 5-star customer reviews on Google for our business. Now we have introduced a new way of decorating cakes with edible printed sheets. We print images, messages and corporate logos for our own cake decorating needs and also print for smaller cake decorating firms in and around Milton Keynes.
Do you conduct baking classes or do you have any plans to start them soon?
Yes, we do have plans of running cake decorating classes for kids and adults in the near future.
What are the signature products of The Scrumptious Cakes?
The signature product of The Scrumptious Cakes is the white chocolate ganache which is loved by all age groups. White chocolate is absolutely scrumptious and melts into the mouth and being off-white in colour gives us a chance to give it any colour in accordance with a cake theme.
How has been the growth of your baking business since launch?
The Scrumptious Cakes started with word of mouth from making few cakes a month to online customers coming from our website www.thescrumptiouscakes.co.uk making about 3-10 cakes a week (especially during the summer time). Now we remain very busy and we make a variety of cakes. Initially, we only made birthday cakes for kids and grown-ups, anniversary cakes; then we moved to making larger cakes.
After launching our above-mentioned website, we started making corporate cakes, 3D cakes, edible image prints and wedding cakes.
Till date, you must have executed many challenging cake ideas. Mayura please tell us about a few of them.
Our first challenge we faced is to work with white chocolate ganache as white chocolate ganache can be a bit sticky to work with compared to other icings and can easily melt in hot weather.
Making a Lamborgini cake for the first time was another challenge, had to check online how other people made it and how I can do my best.
Making a 3D animal face cakes one was Tom’s face with Jerry sitting on Tom’s head hitting him with the hammer and Lion guards face 3D cake.
What is your favourite cake recipe?
Vanilla sponge cake with 3 fruit filling pineapple, kiwis and strawberries making it a mix fruit flavour. In this filling we create one entire layer of one fruit then a layer of strawberry flavoured cream and then the other.
As a professional baker, what are the challenges in life?
Managing home and business is the biggest challenge for a women entrepreneur. Pricing is another challenge as most customers look for cheaper cakes, but the hard work put in to create fresh, scrumptious cakes with a wow factor takes a lot of time and effort.
Another big challenge as an entrepreneur that I face is from this busy schedule how I am going to take the time to plan my next step to make my business more big and profitable.
Who are your inspirations in the field of baking?
Paul Bradford is my source of inspiration.
What are your future plans for The Scrumptious Cakes?
I want The Scrumptious Cakes to be a brand in the cake industry.
Anything else you want to share…
I would like to thank my parents for giving me all the values and skills they have taught me for who I am and all that I have created in my life. I would also like to thank my little angel – my daughter who keeps saying my Mum is the best cake decorator, I feel she blesses me in that way. Whenever I create something for her or is her demand, it turns out absolutely delicious. I would also like to thank my other family members who have also contributed to my success.
And one last question of this session Mayura, if you have had one wish…
To have my cake factory established.
