For Coimbatore-based 36-year-old entrepreneur Gayathri Arul, designing jewelleries is more a passion for her than a profession. Her life as a handmade jewellery designer gives her the breathing space to showcase her creativity skills. She is the founder of G3 Accessories, a fashion accessory store which specializes in making Paper Quilled Jewellery, Silk Thread Jewellery, Terracotta Jewellery, etc.
Today, in this interview session, the talented jewellery designer Gayathri Arul joins us to share her inspiring story!
Hi Gayathri, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. Please tell us a few lines about yourself.
I am Gayathri Arul, a 36-year-old lady blessed with two loving kids from Coimbatore, India. Academically, I hold an MSc and M.Phil in Nutrition degree. Later on in my life, to turn my passion into profession, I chose to become an entrepreneur.
Tell us about your venture G3 Accessories.
Initially, I was designing the accessories for me and my daughter. My friend appreciated the works and the perfection. One day, a friend of mine approached me to design her jewellery for a marriage reception and I did it. That jewellery had a lot of eyeballs hitting in that function and friends and relatives of my friend (few of them were college going girls) started enquiring about her accessories and she referred my name. That’s when I thought of starting a small venture where I will be able to serve my friends and relatives. Soon G3 Accessories came into existence. We have come a long way now. At present, we also export handmade jewelleries to Singapore, Malasyia, U.S, etc. We have regular dealers who buy these handmade products from us and sell them to different fashion houses.
How did you learn jewellery making?
I had a passion for Handmade Jewellery but was not aware of where and whom should I approach to get formally educated in this area. It was on a Sunday while I was going through the events column in The Hindu Classifieds, I saw an advertisement which stated that quilling classes are scheduled to happen in Coimbatore in the coming weekend.
Since this was going to happen on the weekend, my Husband was fine with it and I attended the first formal class on jewellery making. I enjoyed these jewellery making classes and made a few friends too.
That was the start and I started to spend a lot of time on the internet to apply my creativity.
What inspired you to start working on handcrafted jewelleries?
I always had a passion towards fashion accessories. I am lucky that I had a girl child and I would match her accessories with her dress. My friends would appreciate me for that and that’s when I was attracted to handcrafted products. I started to Google the best fashion jewellery for my daughter and would purchase it. I always admired the jewellery designing art. The interest which brings out the perfection of a jewellery and I was very sure that this can only be done if only you have a strong passion and interest apart from generating income. I had that passion. I thought of trying something with my own hands for my daughter. This is how I started to work on handcrafted jewellery.
What are some of the signature products of G3 Accessories? In what ways do you attempt to be creative with your jewellery designs?
At G3 Accessories, we make Paper Quilled Jewellery, Silk Thread Jewellery, Terracotta Jewellery. We also make custom made bridal accessories for occasions like marriage, receptions and also for other events like baby shower functions, stage performance shows, Mom and Daughter photo shoots, etc. These are our special products which we do on demand apart from regular accessories.
What are the present challenges that you are facing? In what ways are you planning to overcome them?
Shipping the products to overseas is the biggest challenge for us. Some of the products are prone to breaking down during transportation. So we generally ask the customers to check if their relatives are travelling to India in near future and if that happens we hand over the products to them so that they can give them to our customers.
Gayathri, what are your plans to scale up the growth of G3 Accessories?
I have always been unique in my jewellery designs and I would like to focus on that. I also have plans to focus on custom made Bridal Accessories. Few people have asked me to guide them on handmade jewellery.
I am planning to launch an online tutorial for my products. I am also exploring the possibilities of expanding our deliverables to UK and Australia too.
Your advice to those who want to enter into the world of jewellery designing…
Interest and passion are two major attributes which are required to establish yourself in the field of jewellery designing. These days Internet plays a major role. Hence, people willing to enter this field should use internet for branding and promoting their products.
Anything else you want to share…
I would like to mention that my Dad and my Husband are my biggest supports in my journey as an entrepreneur. They give me guidance every time I need. They also make sure that the kids don’t feel my absence when I am working on tight deadlines. As a woman, I have to balance both professional and family life.
