In a press conference today, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries revealed the tariff plan of Reliance Jio that would come into effect from April 01, 2017. The company has named this as the Jio Prime Membership Programme.
Ever since September 2016, after Mukesh Ambani announced the official launch of Reliance Jio, price wars among the telecom operators in India kicked off. The company initially launched the Jio Welcome Offer. As part of this offer, all services from the company remained free until December 31, 2016. The free services included unlimited use of Jio’s high-speed 4G internet data, unlimited voice calls to any network in India, unlimited access to a wide range of Jio services, etc.
A few days before the Welcome Offer was scheduled to end, Jio made a strategic move to retain its users. They announced the Jio Happy New Year offer starting January 01, 2017. They again offered free services until March 31, 2017. The only difference was in the daily limit of the high-speed 4G internet data. The company reduced it to 1 GB and beyond that, the speed of the internet would go down to 128 kbps.
Jio Prime Membership Programme for Rs. 99 per year
Now, as the Jio Happy New Year offer is scheduled to end soon, Mukesh Ambani made another announcement today. This time he launched the Jio Prime Membership Programme.
As part of this programme, an existing Jio user or a user who enrolls for Jio before March 31, 2017, would continue enjoying the Happy New Year offer for an introductory price of Rs. 99 for the first year. From the second year, the users of Jio need to pay Rs. 303 per month to use the same services.
Furthermore, in the press conference, Mukesh Ambani revealed that even if a user doesn’t enroll for the Jio Prime offer, the user may still continue making unlimited voice calls to any network in India for free of cost.
Mukesh Ambani also said that after March 31, Jio Prime members will gain access to several new deals from time to time. He further said that, Jio will match each and every tariff plan that other operators are offering or will offer at the same rate but with 20 percent more data.
“With Jio it is my promise that we will provide world class quantity and quality of data at prices that are affordable,” Mukesh Ambani said in the press conference.
Since launch, Reliance Jio has added 100 million customers to its network. This roughly translates to about 7 users per second. Also, Reliance Jio users together have consumed more than 100 crore GB of data in the last 170 days which is about 3.3 crore GB a day. This has taken India to the number 1 place in the world in terms of mobile data usage!
