In today’s fast-paced world, splitting time between work and personal life often becomes a big challenge. Most of us tend to ignore our health and eventually fall prey to various diseases. To stay fit doing some workouts are necessary. The biggest problem, however, is to find the right coach who would guide through the entire training process. To address this issue, personal fitness training app Fitso came into being on August 07, 2015. Fitso, the brainchild of 3 IIT Delhi Alumni – Rahool Sureka, Naman Sharma and Saurabh Aggarwal, aims at building a mobile application to make personal fitness training accessible and affordable for everyone. The fitness app allows its users to monitor their workouts and calories for free. Fitso users can also seek personal training services for a nominal fee from a real human coach online through the application platform!
Today, Rahool Sureka, one of the co-founders of Fitso, joins us in this interview session to share their story.
Hi, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. To start with, we would request you to tell us a few lines about the founders of Fitso.
We met 9 years back on IIT Delhi campus in the 1st year of our undergraduate school. Since then, we have been very close friends. During college days, we celebrated our birthdays and sports victories together, did night outs during exam days together and even consoled each other on break-ups. Even after graduation, we used to meet regularly on get-togethers having all night discussions around business ideas, sports and travels. Most importantly, Rahool and Naman stay together in same flat even today. We know each other inside out and clearly understand the strengths and weaknesses of each other tested in good and bad times.
We believe, we have the perfect team to crack this business. I have always been into running, fitness and adventure sports and got significant experience of business development during Flipkart’s time of growth. Naman joined Zomato out of college and was the first person on their mobile apps team. He stayed at Zomato for 4 years as Head of Mobile Products and has fantastic experience in building consumer facing products and technology at scale. Rahool served as Head of Marketing at YepMe (India’s largest online fashion brand).
When did you start working on your fitness app Fitso? What were the problems that motivated you to build the Fitso app?
We have been working on Fitso for the last 18 months. We launched the beta version of our fitness app on September 16, 2015 and have done various iterations since then. When Saurabh was training for Ironman, he used to travel to most parts of India in search of a coach. Finally, he settled down for a coach based out of Australia and got online personal fitness training. It worked wonders for him and from there came the idea that personal fitness training can be brought online which can make hiring a personal trainer accessible and affordable for everyone.
Please tell us about Fitso.
At Fitso, we are building a mobile application to make personal fitness training accessible and affordable for everyone. Fitso is a comprehensive fitness app, which allows users to track their workouts and calories for free and take premium personal training services from a real human coach online at a fraction of the cost of hiring a personal trainer offline. We want to track the overall lifestyle of fitness seekers through technology and use this data with AI and the insight of human coaches to provide solutions required to reach individual fitness goals.
We are a Tech Company, but we believe that a human coach is necessary to provide the motivation and accountability to make sure people realize their goals. Our technology will be used to make coaches more efficient and enable them to make the better and more informed decisions.
There are many fitness apps available in the online space. In what ways are you different from them?
Fitso is a comprehensive product that covers all aspects of fitness to produce the required results. We have a clear focus on human coaches to fill the gap in motivation and accountability and customize training to fit everyone’s needs.
People currently use multiple apps to keep track of their fitness data which is very cumbersome for the user and also these apps are unable to provide a clear guide to users since they have very limited data. People also have to consult coaches offline since most of the apps do not have customizable training platform. From our personal experience in fitness and technology sector, we understand the pain point of the user of getting distracted from their fitness regime very soon due to lack of motivation, time devotion and accountability. We felt that by giving a personal human trainer along with an easy to use and engaging mobile app interface will help in solving the problem to an extent.
Share the investment details.
We have raised one seed round of funding of $ 200k last year in January 2016.
What is Fitso’s revenue generation process?
We will make money from online personal fitness training services. We have an average ticket size of 100 USD per person per annum. In the next 5 years, we will get 1 million paying customers giving us a revenue of 100 million USD.
If we calculate top to bottom, E-fitness market stands at USD 4.7 billion currently and will grow to over to USD 10 billion by 2020. We can make USD 100 million+, i.e., at least 1% of the market share in the next 5 years.
How has been the growth for Fitso since its launch?
Fitso currently has 300k registered users. We have built features to cover all the major aspects of healthy lifestyle like GPS tracking for running/walking/cycling, video workouts and calorie tracking. We also have created tools for coaches to provide in-app personalized workout and meal plans. To refine the product and improve the user experience is important for us and we are working continuously on it. We have received great feedback and are rated 4.6/5 on both the Play Store and App Store. We were featured two times on Play Store and have been awarded as the “Best App of 2016” by App Store.
What are your future plans?
We are planning to scale our user base to 5 million in next 2 years. We have already launched our beta versions of offline programs in Delhi NCR and will be scaling it to all major cities in India.
