There is a famous quote which says, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” The words of this quote perfectly fits in for Tanvi Sovani Palshikar’s life. She is an art lover and enjoyed drawing and sketching during her school days. She pursued Interior Designing which again needed the vision of an artist. And, right now Tanvi is a professional home baker and uses her creativity skills to give shape to beautiful cake artworks. Since February 2013, Tanvi Sovani Palshikar has been successfully running Cakilicious, her own venture of customized theme cakes in Pune. The praises that she receives from her clients on every cake that she bakes inspires her to become an even better baker.
Tanvi Sovani Palshikar, the talented young home baker from Pune joins us in this interview session today to share her inspiring story with our readers.
Hi Tanvi, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. To start with, please tell us a few lines about yourself.
I was born and brought up in Pune, did all my schooling and colleges in Pune. I am an Interior Designer by profession and worked professionally for 6 years before taking up baking as my profession.
Your edible cake arts look quite impressive and tempting. What is your memory of early association with arts?
I have always been an ART person! Since my school days, I was into drawing and sketching. I pursued a career in Interior Designing which needed an eye for art again! Baking tickles the artistic side in me. I love to create and attempt different things.
You pursued interior designing, then, what motivated you to become a professional baker?
I was never a kitchen person all my life and had never stepped into a kitchen till I got married! Then it all started from baking simple cakes for my family and friends, and their praises made me feel that I should look into it more seriously!
Tanvi, have you ever attended baking courses at any baker school?
As of now, I didn’t go to any professional baking school to attend their baking courses.
However, I have attended a small baking course. It was a two-day baking class with some other bakers.
Please tell us about your home bakery Cakilicious.
I started baking professionally under the name Cakilicious in 2013. I used to work part time with office (Interior Designing) till 2015. At Cakilicious, making something unique is always on the agenda, and I am not into the ‘run-of-the-mill’ cakes. I only bake theme fondant cakes and 3D cakes, and any other cake that is challenging!
How was the feeling when you got your first order as a professional baker?
It was great for sure! People wanting to buy something that you made just as a hobby is a big thing. More than that, the satisfactory texts and calls were all the more exciting.
What are some of the signature products of Cakilicious? Which one is your personal favourite?
Cakilicious is into making fondant cakes exclusively. We do Theme based cakes and 3D cakes. Lately, the Paithani cake has become a signature cake of Cakilicious!
Anything I create new is my top favourite! It changes every week!
What are some of the challenging cake ideas that you have executed till date?
There have been many! But the one that I would really like to mention is a cake that had two standing bottles, a soda can, an ice bucket and some starters and a big cake base to be taken to Mumbai all the way from Pune! More than the cake, on which I worked for two full days, the travel was worse!
Being a baker, what are some of the challenges in life? How do you deal with them?
Most people are used to buying cakes off the rack at the bakery. But the contents of the cake and the hygiene level at the factory remains unknown. I as a home baker can guarantee on the hygiene and the quality of all the materials used in it. And all these don’t come cheap. 3D cakes or theme cakes require more time and physical effort, and convincing some client of the cost is the most challenging part!
Tanvi, please tell us about the growth story of Cakilicious.
The growth of Cakilicious was not easy. It was slow and steady. It involved a lot of hard work, sleepless nights, and sessions of tensions and stress.
What plans do you have to scale up the operations of Cakilicious?
As of now, I will be baking from home itself with a hope to start something big soon!
Your advice to those who are looking to establish their careers in baking…
It is not as easy as it looks. Baking and decoration might come easy, finishing comes with skill and lots of patience. Have lots of patience and perseverance.
Anything else you want to share…
I feel that we need more professional education in this baking field.

I I had one wish, I would want to start my own 3D cake store soon!
