Hi Sruthi, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Sruthi Jayachandran from Chennai, pursuing Visual Communication at Women’s Christian College, Chennai. I’m an entrepreneur and is the founder of The BIG BOX Theory. Besides, I am also a baker, a dancer and an athlete.
Sruthi, what is your earliest memory of association with art and craft?
I want to thank my school for giving me a good exposure to craft works and enthusing the skills inbound. My interest for art and craft kick started right from my school days.
Gradually, the interest took the form of my profession.
Tell us about your craft store and gifting venture The BIG BOX Theory. What motivated you to start this venture?
Being the curious one, I’ve always wanted to pamper my friends with innovative gifts and that’s when I was in a hunt for an unique gift but I couldn’t find one. When the hunt continued I came up with an idea of designing and creating a custom made product with my friend’s photographs. My idea topped among my fellow mates and it ended up as my first order. I’ve always been creative and prepare unique personalized gifts for my family members and soul mates for every occasion. The BIG BOX Theory is a space for one to expand and express levels of excitement, joy and emotion. We believe that what we do will create memorable memories for you and your loved ones.
In what ways are you different from your competitors?
Just a one phrase answer –”WE CREATE, OTHERS FOLLOW”.
How do you go about planning/choosing the designs for your products?
Customers contact us with inquiries through our Social Media handles where we message back and forth. The confirmation of the order is done through WhatsApp. I enquire about the occasion and the products that they are looking for and then we move to the creative phase. We work together and finalize products after a few designs .
What are some of the best-selling gift products of The BIG BOX Theory?
Signature products of The BIG BOX Theory are photo bottle lamps, different varieties of chocolate bouquet, our handmade lampshades and string lanterns.
Sruthi, how has been the journey so far for The BIG BOX Theory?
It all started from scratch by customizing a gift box for my best friend who believed the creativity in me placed his very first order from TBBT and the innovation continued as my career, blooming as a promising young entrepreneur.
Who inspires you the most in your journey?
Rather than inspiration, my repeating customers and their “GIFTING MIND” motivates me a lot.
Describe a typical day in your life.
Customizing a complete gift box is my kind of a typical day.
How do go about promoting your venture The BIG BOX Theory?
Initially, it started through person to person referral. Promotion then continued by promoting through social media handles such as Instagram and Facebook, followed by referral discounts and issuing gift vouchers for every order that has been placed till date and also, introducing sale culture on every occasion and lastly it ended up with a “FRIDAY SALE” – (i.e every Friday one of my products will be on sale).
What are the present challenges that you are facing right now? How do you plan to overcome them?
During my college days, managing my academics/projects and orders was the biggest task. It was super challenging for me initially to plan ahead with the orders and work accordingly but I still managed to deliver promising products. I wouldn’t let the passion within me down at any situation.
The most challenging part was managing my academics and being the admin of the venture by taking in orders and interacting with the clients and working along with their creative mind. Most importantly, clients expect me to be available 24/7 which is hard, still I sort things out and work accordingly.
What are your future plans for The Big Box Theory?
To have my own start up outlet for showcasing my products and to start up 24/7 delivery option for my clients to fulfil their happiness of gifting their loved one’s at the first minute of their big day with ease.
Anything else you want to share…
Every completed order is my success. Do not let down your favourite wish. DREAM IT! WORK FOR IT! ACHIEVE IT! NEVER GIVE UP!
And, one last question of this session Sruthi, if you have had one wish…
I would wish for an updated ideology, unique creativity, satisfied clients, strength and health to help my customers “EXPERIENCE THEIR HAPPINESS OF INNOVATIVE GIFTING” till my last breath.
