For Bangalore-based home baker Purbasha Saha, her career as a professional baking artist helps her deal with the stress of life. She has always enjoyed art and craft since her childhood days. At school, she enjoyed painting. As a profession, she pursued architecture. And, to take her love for arts forward, Purbasha started her entrepreneurial venture Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes in the year 2014. She is a self-taught baker and never attended baking classes at a baker school. Whatever she learnt in baking has been through the trial and error methods. The process of self-learning also helped Purbasha in coming up with her own and unique baking recipes.
There are many home bakers in Bangalore who never hesitate to paint their imagination and ideas on a blank baking canvas. Purbasha Saha is definitely one amongst such talented home bakers. Today, Purbasha, the founder of Bangalore-based home bakery Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes joins us in this interview session with conflatingVisions to share her inspiring story.
Hi Purbasha, welcome to this interview session of conflatingVisions. To start with, we would request you to tell us a few lines about yourself.
Born in Kolkata and lived a few years in New York before settling down at Bangalore has given me a wide range of exposure to the world of baking and French desserts. Art was always a part of my life since the beginning be it painting at school, pursuing architecture as a profession and then finding solace in the world of baking and sugar art.
Baking is very therapeutic for me. It helps me deal with all the stress that life throws at modern women these days. More so, there is no greater joy than the smile and satisfaction on my clients’ face. That’s what keeps the wheel churning.
Who introduced you to the world of baking? At what age did you bake your first cake?
I do not have any enchanting story of sudden discovering my Grandma’s recipe book among hidden family treasures. In fact, baking was never a part of my family kitchen until I picked it up. My stay in the US was like an eye opener to the greater world of food outside. It gave me the exposure to European desserts which enchanted me and thus I was drawn to the world of baking. All my baking recipes are experimented with trial and errors until I was convinced.
My first cake was when I was only 10 years old. Sadly it wasn’t a pleasant one as I had burnt it.
Have you attended any professional baking classes to learn baking & pastry arts?
No, I am more of a self-taught baker and have never attended any professional baking classes to learn. Most of the learning is through trial and error over sleepless nights and tears.
What motivated you to become a professional baker?
The love for sweet things and art put together was all that was needed for me to take the leap into baking full time.
Please tell us about Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes.
Baking was something that always excited me and the more I baked the more I was pushed by my friends and family to take it to the next level. That’s when my brain child was born under the Venture name Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes.
I do customized cake and dessert tables for weddings, engagements, birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions. With the latest trend focusing on dessert table, I cater to theme based cakes, cookies, cupcakes, tarts, desserts cups to have a gorgeous focal point of a party.
As a professional baker, what was your first assignment? How was the feeling?
As a professional baker, my first assignment was a baby shower cake.
It was an immense pleasure to see the smile and content on my client’s face.
What are some of the signature products of Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes?
Chocolate fantasy cake, red velvet with cream cheese, Chantilly frosting baked cheesecake are some of the signature items of Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes.
Being a baker, what are the challenges in life?
I am the only person handling all the orders for Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes. I do not have a retail outlet where I can stock my products. There is a limit to the amount of baking I can do out of my home kitchen, on my own. I would say that the lack of a retail outlet and the lack of a team are my biggest challenges at the moment.
Narrate some of your success stories.
Success stories are when your cakes travel across cities in flights just because someone wishes your art to be a part of their celebration.
Success stories are when u push your own limits to be able to deliver huge bulk orders all by yourself single-handedly.
Purbasha, what plans do you have to scale up the operations of Sweet Nothings Couture Cupcakes?
I would definitely like to have a work space of my own, where I can bake without any constraints. In the long run, I would like to set up a boutique shop for my baked goodies. I do not want to set up a chain, since I am happy working with exclusive personalized products for my clients.
Your advice to the budding cake artists who are looking to establish their careers in baking…
Make sure you know your basic because if the basics are strong you will be able to build a world around it.
Anything else you want to share…
Any new venture is never a success until the family stand behind it to support its organic growth. My husband and my 6-year-old son have been an epitome of support physically and mentally which is what sometimes you need when the going gets hard. I can’t thank them enough.
And one last question of this session Purbasha, if you have had one wish…
If I had one wish, I would wish my dream boutique cake shop at the city centre buzzing with happy smiling customers sipping a cappuccino over a French Opera dessert while catching up on the latest gossip with their girlfriends.
Well, just so you know I do believe wishes do come true.
