When passion becomes profession, the job turns out to be enjoyable. And, the best part is you are working to fulfill your own dreams. One such person is Tarun Chawla, a Delhi-based Indian photographer who has established himself as a successful wedding photographer of the country. Tarun’s idea of life is to capture memories and to create many! He considers the people around him as his inspiration to produce better works every time. For Tarun, the love affair with photography started when he was only 16, and it was Nokia 3660 which helped him record the memories. That young boy has walked a long way since then! Today, in this session, we have with us the talented photographer Tarun Chawla to tell his story.
Hi Tarun, welcome to our platform conflatingVisions. To start with, please say a few lines about you and your team members.
Myself Tarun Chawla, a photographer by passion as well as profession. My idea of life is to capture memories and creating many! The fantastic people I meet in life inspire me to the core, beautifying my vision towards expressions.
Where is your home?
When did you start photography? How old were you then?
My journey with photography has been fantastic so far.
Started with photography in school with a Nokia 3660 mobile in 2004, I was 16 back then and in class 11th.
Bought a digicam in college in 2006 and shifted to a DSLR in 2007.
Started with weddings in 2009.
What inspired to take up photography as your profession?
I just loved clicking my friends in their natural moments; in school, lunch breaks, picnic, after school fun, etc. Later when I went to college, I picked an University in J&K with beautiful landscape all around [SMVDU University]. The beauty all around was one major factor in picking photography as my passion. The true calling which came to make this as my main profession was immense happiness the pictures brought when people saw them, usual reaction was ‘Omg! This is so pretty, when did you take this’. The best & the last part: ‘not knowing’ when I was clicking them, evolved into my style.
Tell us about your photography style. Which genres of photography attract you the most?
As said, the best part was ‘not knowing’ when I was clicking pictures, evolved into my style of photography. I don’t favour posed stills, immaculate pictures arrive clicking people when they are themselves, enjoying, dancing, with friends, etc.
You have specialized in photographing weddings. What according to you is the most challenging thing in wedding photography?
The most challenging thing in photographing weddings is to make sure everyone is happy with the pictures! From ensuring the emotional moments to covering business partners of the parents, everything needs to be delivered and that too, spot on.
Do you believe in sticking to the technical rules of photography?
Technical rules are very important! It’s the basic underlying principle which has to be correct each time by default. Consider technical rules like the clutch-brake combination in driving a car, initially, one has to pay a lot of attention to it but later it becomes muscle memory, and then you can actually enjoy the drive! In photography: shutter speed, aperture, lighting, iso, which lens to pick, where to shoot from is all part of the technical aspect. Once I got this right, I started concentrating more on moments and compositions.
What is your definition of a perfect wedding photograph?
Perfect wedding photograph is what makes people happy! Though I love candid moments but at the same time, I love some classical portraits which can be blown up 10 feet tall!
Narrate some of the success stories of Tarun Chawla Photography.
I have won few awards, did band baja bride, few more tv shows, etc. but just part of being a photographer.
A dream destination where you want to shoot a wedding…
And, one last question of this session Tarun, if you have had one wish…
To have a wedding and story like the ones I shoot.
