She feels creativity in baking business is very important and these days people don’t mind paying extra to get a customized baking product of their own choice. Today, in this session, Rachna Bengani speaks to conflatingVisions and tells us about her home baking venture Delyts.

Hi Rachna, glad to have you with us today in this session at conflatingVisions. To begin with, we would like you to say a few lines about you.

Hello, I am Rachna Bengani, a Cake Artist by profession from Kolkata. Like many I too quit my job to follow my passion for baking.

What inspired you to bake?

I never planned to get into this profession. I was always into cooking. Baking always scared and amazed me. But I always loved to design or decorate things be it clothes, my home or anything. I then got inspired by wedding cakes and an urge to make tier cakes some day got me into this profession.

Tell us about your venture Delyts.

Delyts is about designer and customized cakes for almost any occasion you can think of. As I work singlehandedly, I try to look after every personal need of the client and try to make the best effort to make them happy.

What are the signature items of Delyts?

My USP is my decoration especially the realistic looking sugar flowers. I try not to repeat my designs and convince my client for anything new every time. In terms of flavours my Dutch Truffle, Butterscotch and Strawberry Gateaux are very much loved.

How important is creativity in this baking business?

Today the market trend is like people go for something different. To express their love they want everything personalized and they don’t mind paying extra for it. So yes creativity is important as a client. I too will prefer to gift my loved ones something designer and creative instead of anything basic or simple.

How do you keep your creativities refreshing every time?

I think travelling refreshes anyone and you come up with fresh and new ideas. And of course keep upgrading yourself with newest techniques in your business.

Narrate some of your success stories.

You are successful when you see that smile on your clients’ face and that twinkle in their eyes when they cut the cake. But most fondly I remember one of my cake with almost 20 Disney characters. The cake was treated like a celebrity. People were just clicking the pictures and they had an expression that they had not seen anything like this in Calcutta. And very recently, I made cupcakes and cake for actors Jisshu Sengupta and Nilanjana Sengupta’s anniversary and birthday. It was one happy moment for me. But the best feeling is when people tell me that my work stands out and is very classy.

What are your future plans for growth?

Future plans are to keep upgrading my skills, keep on showcasing good work and keep on bringing smile to as many as I can.

How do you go about promoting Delyts?

Word of mouth works the best. Social networking sites play a great role as we can showcase our work and reach out to people on a larger scale.

What is the most challenging part in this baking business?

It’s a challenge and pressure to come up with a new and different idea with every cake especially when your customers’ expectations become very high it’s a huge pressure to satisfy them.

How do you overcome it?

I put my heart, soul and love in each of my cake. I work as if it’s the last cake I am doing.

If not baking, what do you think you would be doing?

Hmmm I think a Fashion Designer.

Anything else you want to share with us…

Be Patient, Passionate and Positive. Follow your heart and be honest in whatever you do.

And, one last question of this session Rachna, if you have had one wish…

One wish is to make a Cake for my mentor and I am there when he is cutting the Cake. To set an example for anyone who want to pursue their passion.
