Kolkata based Nisha Oswal started her professional journey as a home baker in September 2015 after she founded Nisha’s Bakery. However, her passion for baking developed much before when she was just 12! It was a hobby for young Nisha at that time which gradually took shape into a successful profession. Her bakery is only 6 months old and it is already having a strong customer base. Today, in this session, Nisha speaks to our team and reveals her experiences as a home baker. We believe this session will inspire many of you to take up baking as a profession.

Hi Nisha, welcome to our platform conflatingVisions. Would request you to say a few lines about you.

I am Nisha Oswal and I am an interior designer and a home baker by profession. I love cooking and baking. I love to cook and have been doing so for many years. It is a stress booster for me. But, a lot of people would come up and ask me to bake for special occasions and that is when I decided to start my home bakery.

Why did you choose baking as your profession?

I have always had a knack for cooking and baking ever since I was 12. I am very passionate about it. I took it up as a profession because I wanted to do something I love and there is nothing else I would rather do than baking.

Tell us about your venture Nisha’s Bakery.

Nisha’s Bakery is a small and cosy ordering space for your cakes, cupcakes and chocolates. Customization, flavour options and quick results – I have everything that people would want to celebrate their special occasion or just to satisfy their sweet tooth.

How do you differentiate yourself from your competitors?

What sets me apart from other home bakers in the city is that I care about the feelings that go into my every order. I do not have any set designs that I do for my clients. I discuss various ideas, listen to my client’s needs and then move forward with the order, so that their gifts, surprises and sinful indulgences are special and one of a kind.

How big is your current team?

I work from a small and cosy work area in my house. Since, I take pride in my creations; I usually do not take up large orders at a time. I like to take my own time and do things perfectly rather than providing something the clients can easily get at a cake shop near them.

How do you build a successful customer base for Nisha’s Bakery?

I already had a customer base even before I started my own bakery. I used to bake for fun for my friends and relatives. Most of the new customers I have are through word of mouth and my Facebook Page.

Narrate some of your success stories.

One day I got a call at 7 a.m. asking if I can make around 100 nutella cupcakes and after eight chocolates for a party at night the same day. I was reluctant at first to take up such a large order with almost no time. But, I took it up as a challenge and got to work immediately after. I worked tirelessly for over 10 hours and in the end the result was amazing. I got a call from the client at night and I was happy to know that everyone loved my bakes. It was through this order that I got many more clients who order occasionally.

What are the present challenges in this business?

One of the greatest challenges in this business has been that of the pricing. People are so used to getting baked goods from grocery stores or using readymade mixes that are much cheaper compared to what I bake which is from scratch. So, people who appreciate and enjoy fresh food do not mind paying the fair prices I charge. While you may not get a dozen cupcakes for like 50 rupees, but, you can easily find a variety of delicious and fresh cupcakes to choose from at reasonable price.

Another challenge of having a bakery in my home is the constant battle of not giving up my and my family’s privacy and yet be able to expand your business.

How do you overcome these challenges?

I try to make things convenient for my customers so that I am easily reachable and they do not have to rush to my home to be able to place orders. I mostly rely on word of mouth referrals and social media to bring business. I am always available via phone, email and Whatsapp so that I can discuss the needs of my clients and listen to what they exactly need before they place any order with me.

What are your future plans for growth?

I am in talks with a few event planners in the city to collaborate on different events they organize. It will not only help me expand my business, but help me grow as a baker.

Anything else you want to share with us…

One thing I have to mention is that when I started the bakery, many people would say that many people are baking nowadays and you will not find success. But, it is because of my family, friends and loyal customers that I have been successful as a home baker. For all budding home bakers who are afraid of starting out, I just want to say that do what you love and you will surely be successful at it.

And, one last question of this session, if you have had one wish…

I just wish I continue to flourish and be able to do what I love for the rest of my life.
